Minty Magazine is proud to support small Australian businesses like The Little Potion Co who are creating these magical play kits for kids. At a time when many of us are looking for ideas to keep our children entertained offline, sisters Alicia and Jacinta have created a whimsical collection of activities with a focus on mindfulness. We are sharing their beautiful story, what inspires their collection and how a birthday wish became the inspiration behind their brand.

Who is The Little Potion Co? Please tell us a bit about yourself and how you came about!

“We are two sisters, Alicia and Jacinta. As kids, we could always be found making mud pies, flower potions and creating magic in our backyard. When Jacinta’s son William asked for a potion kit for his 7th birthday, the magical memories of our childhood came flooding back. We couldn’t find any potion kits here in Australia, so Jacinta decided to make her own. It wasn’t meant to be a business at first. Jacinta had a successful career in interiors and Alicia had just opened her own gift shop, but we both had a feeling that wouldn’t go away, and we knew we could create something wonderful for children in this digital world.

We launched our first range of potion kits in September 2019 after a year of designing and testing. Our original mindful range comes with spell cards for potions that can help to create a positive mindset. Such as a potion for self love, a magic spell to calm the beast inside you and an elixir to give you the confidence of a mermaid. Our little potion kits are all designed, created, tested and handmade by us in Melbourne.”

What are the philosophies and values of The Little Potion Co?

“We believe in kindness, helping other women succeed and celebrating the magic of childhood.”

What are the biggest challenges of owning an online business?

“The biggest challenge for us at the moment is getting our brand and products seen. I think visibility is a big issue with most small businesses, with the ever changing algorithms and constant technology overload. It’s hard.”

What is the most rewarding part of your business?

“The most rewarding part is the feedback we get from our gorgeous customers. The videos of kids playing with our kits, the feedback that it has helped to open up communication, that it’s a way for parents to connect with their children. And when we get told that a child has played with their kit outside for an hour “and they never do that”, it’s just so special.”

What inspires your collections?

“We are constantly inspired by our children and what they are interested in, what movies they are watching and the books that they are reading. So often we will be reading a book at night that inspires an idea for a spell and we will sneak the book out of the bedroom after they are asleep to read it again and take notes.”

What are three keywords that describe your business?

  1. Whimsical
  2. Playful
  3. Magical

With such a beautiful range of products already, what is next for The Little Potion Co?

“We have so many ideas! We have some new kits in the works as well as ideas for some teen kits, a subscription service and party packs. With kids and lockdowns and a very quickly growing business, we don’t have as much time as we’d like to work on new products. We’ve just hired our first staff member though, so watch this space!”
