Coastal Inspired Boys Room

Designer Maddison Black took her love for boho coastal and created a bedroom that her son Henley could grow into, rather than grow out of! By making furniture selections that would stand the test of time, together with a colour palette that is fresh, she has created a space that will suit this growing family now and well into the future.

Tell us about Henley!

“Our little Henley, aka ‘Henley Bear’ is our two year old son and he is absolutely wild! He is our book loving, ball throwing, drawer on all the things – and because of this it was essential for us to have a designated area for him to draw with paper and pencils and not on the walls!

What was the brief for this room?

“The brief was in keeping with the boho coastal vibe of the house. Henley is two years old, so I put my baby thoughts aside to create him a room that’s as practical for him now as it will be in a few years.”

What was your inspiration?

“I’ve always loved boho coastal and really wanted to bring that into the kids’ rooms as well. Whenever I’m looking for a bit of inspiration I love to scroll through Pinterest and read the old blog posts from Three Birds Renovations.”

How did you select your colour palette?

“Keeping to the costal theme, we knew we wanted green but something a little brighter to keep it fun. Dulux Diorite set the tone for the room and looks gorgeous with the natural wood furniture. Dulux Natural White is on the other walls. Then we selected a gorgeous palm print decal for the wall behind the drawing table and it all just came together.”

What is your favourite feature in the room?

“The drawing table and little reading lounge are my favourite. It’s fun and playful for both kids and adults to enjoy.”

What was the biggest challenge?

“Definitely the paneling on the walls and correctly lining up the power point cut outs.”

What is your overall favourite thing about the space?

“The pairing of the green walls and the natural wood creates a really calm space. When designing my kids’ bedrooms, I wanted to create something that’s as perfect now as it will be in five years’ time. The goal is to create a room for them to grow into – not out of – and I think we’ve really achieved that.”
