Cloth Nappies – The Simple Choice

Seedling Baby designs and manufactures cloth nappies and practical accessories to support families switching to reusable nappies. Made from soft, breathable fabrics, cloth nappies are the simple choice when it comes to reducing landfill and saving money during the nappy-wearing years. Did you know that you can reduce landfill by 20 x 240L garbage bins by using cloth nappies? Families who choose cloth nappies and reusable wipes save $1000 – $1500 during a child’s first 3 years.

Founder of Seedling Baby and Mother of six children, Eva Van Strijp knows a thing or two about cloth nappies. Since making her first cloth nappies as a hobby, her business quickly grew and is now stocked all over Australia, NZ, UK and Europe.

Give us an overview of the products and what inspires your collections?

“We create products that help parents on their cloth nappy journey. Our range is small, just 6 core products that help parents from the very first newborn nappy change right through to night time solutions for older children (and every precious nappy change in between!)

Our hand-painted prints are created by artists which can then take anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months to complete. Then once it’s finalised, the print files go off for production. From labels, to elastic, to the swing tags, to the print fabric itself, there are many steps in the production process. All of these components are produced and then come together to be assembled.”

Tell us about your new products or upcoming releases?

“Whilst our hand-painted prints are incredible, sometimes you just want plain colours so we are launching 4 gorgeous ‘fruit salad’ colours on 22nd March. We are really excited about all the bright and happy colours: just what we need after the last two years!”

What is the most rewarding part of owning your business?

“I read every single email, social media comment, DM, tag and review. It genuinely makes my day knowing that parents love our products and that they’re working well for their babies.”

Which words would you use to describe your business?

“Just one word: simplicity.

I don’t believe in using a whole lot of different, dedicated products if one product will do a variety of tasks. Cloth nappies fall firmly into this category. Apart from the fact that one nappy can be used hundreds of times as a nappy, a flat cloth nappy can also be used as a spew rag, toilet training aid, seat cover, sunshade and mattress protector.

It has been said that disposable nappies simplify life because you just throw them out when you’re done. While this may be true, it doesn’t take into account the numerous resources used to manufacture, distribute and dispose of 2,000 nappies per child for each year they are in nappies. This process is far from simple.

Reusable nappies help me to keep my motherhood journey in focus by choosing an option that reminds me to keep things simple. I can simplify the journey without compromising on performance and have access to the best for my baby, without spending more than I need to. It’s just a matter of an extra load of washing every second day. No household chore could be simpler or more enjoyable than standing beneath a clothesline in the warm sunshine methodically pegging awayReusable nappies help me keep my motherhood journey focused by choosing an option that reminds me to keep things simple.
