Tween-agers are a tricky bunch… no-longer-kids-but-not-yet-teenagers! House of Hawkes updated this room for two boys in need of a fresh space to hang, play, create and sleep.
THE BRIEF
Kathryn Hawkes set about creating a design that is suitably tween-approved. “The room had to be versatile enough for them to spread out and hang with friends, but also practical enough to include desks, storage and workspace – all while reflecting their personality” Kathryn adds.
THE PROCESS
The bedroom had newly installed blinds and beds that were to remain, so the starting point for the design was to incorporate these elements. From here, Kathryn explains, “Our initial vision was to create a feature wall. We immediately fell in love with the contrast the Artic Grey from Jotun was creating against the light headboards.”
THE RESULT
Everything works together in harmony, creating a calming space for the tween boys to enjoy. When asked about her favourite feature Kathryn says “I love the SKADIS pegboards. Not only does it provide extra storage space, but it gives the boys a spot to show off their artistic creations.”
THE CHALLENGES
Desk space was a must-have so this was a bit of a challenge to incorporate, without compromising on storage. However, a cost-effective custom design was created from IKEA using the ALEX drawers and GERTON table top. A constant concern for families is the s-word (storage) having sufficient solutions for hiding away clutter. “We opted for the clean and simple IKEA FJÄLKINGE shelving unit, providing both open and closed storage space” says Kathryn.
