Coastal elements are the inspiration behind this peaceful nursery, designed by Perth-based stylist and photographer Jemma Johnson of STYLED by Jemma. As a mother of two, Jemma has taken much delight in creating rooms for her children that are both beautiful and practical. With some DIY elements and thrifty finds, I am sure you will agree that the result is serene and calming.
TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM?
“I created this nursery when I found out I was expecting my second baby – a boy! Keeping the gender of the baby a surprise wasn’t an option for me, as I was super excited to design a gender-specific nursery for both of my children.”
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?
“When designing Archie’s nursery, I always envisaged a calm and peaceful space incorporating natural and coastal elements. We live close to the beach now as my husband is a keen surfer and I spent a lot of time on the coast growing up, so it’s a big part of our life.”
HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE?
“I opted for a sage green coloured paint (Dulux Wash & Wear – Leamington Spa) and white as the main colours with accents of rust. The furniture and decor are in natural pine and rattan to tie into the coastal theme.”
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE IN THE ROOM?
“Archie’s room is quite small, so I decided to use wallpaper on one wall and paint the remainder using the sage green. When I found the Sage Palms wallpaper from Minnie and Me Interiors I couldn’t go past it! My clever husband installed VJ panelling along the walls which I love, because it references the coastal vibe of a Queenslander and it freshens up the space.”
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
“Probably reigning in my imagination to keep to our budget! It’s very easy to get carried away when sourcing from visual platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram.”
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS SPACE?
“I love the DIY elements in the room, especially revamping a set of drawers that I found on Facebook Marketplace. Originally it was painted black, after a lot of sanding, I took it back to it’s natural pine. Adding some brass palm tree handles from Pineapple Traders completed the look. Also, I love that the wallpaper for it’s timeless print than can grow with Archie over the years. It helps that it’s removable and re-usable – a stylists dream!”
