Sustainable Summer Style with PEGGY

Simone Ryan has a passion for fashion – in particular, sustainable girls clothing. She introduced her brand Peggy to the fold when she was running an agency for childrenswear brands. Inspired by her travels, vintage prints and of course her grandmother (and namesake), Peggy. With a focus on sustainable fabrics, manufacturing and thoughtful design, Peggy is a considered collection for girls made with love, to be loved.

We are delighted to share Simone’s story and the brand new Summer 19 range!

Be sure to check out our top picks from the collection and enjoy a bonus 15% off with code MINTY at checkout.

Who is PEGGY? Tell us a bit about your brand and how it came about

‘I’ve been in the industry for 10 years, running an agency managing much-loved childrenswear labels. I travelled to Bali a lot and decided to add my own brand to the mix in 2008 at a time when the market was relatively small.

Peggy was named after my beautiful grandmother who has been a huge inspiration for me throughout my life, so the name means a lot!’

FOR ANYONE THAT DOESN’T ALREADY KNOW ABOUT PEGGY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE HER?

‘I would say she is a little bit cheeky, a little bit retro. Loves clashing different prints and styles together! She loves the prettiness of dresses and playsuits in vintage prints and florals. Peggy is happy to pass down her clothes to her baby sister or friend so the pieces can be enjoyed for years to come.

As a business, there is one word that encompasses us at the moment: considered. Our choice of fabrics are organic and sustainable. Our partners for manufacturing and retail are carefully considered, in addition to our production numbers and designs.’

Tell us about your new sustainable Summer 19 Collection! It looks absolutely stunning and we want to know the details!

‘This season brings a beautiful collaboration with illustrator Betsy Petersen and Suzy Eskander. You will see a gorgeous cherry print on lightweight cotton jumpsuits, dresses and hats as well as soft linen playsuits in light pink and chambray.

We introduce a new organic collection for baby including ribbed bodysuits that are super soft and comfortable, in mustard and soft pink stripe together with an organic cotton printed tee and dress story.’

What is your design process when picking colours and styles for new products?

‘I work with a gorgeous friend, some beautiful illustrators and my 11 year old daughter who inspires me daily! Travel inspires our colour palette, a library of shapes inspires the range and vintage treasures collected while travelling – all of these elements combined.

That’s really the best part of running a brand, digging into that creativity and going a bit crazy. But then we carefully consider what we produce as a collection. It’s a delicate balance because it has to be commercial but likewise it must tick the creativity and the sustainability box.’

What is next for PEGGY that your customers and our readers can look out for in the future?

‘With the launch of Summer ’19 we begin our commitment to 100% sustainable and ethically made fashion. By Winter 2020 all of our cotton will be certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and we will be using sustainable fabrics including organic linen, Lenzing Modal and Hemp. This will result in long-term quality pieces that can be passed down, lessening the environmental impacts associated with fast fashion. With a strong focus on sustainability we have now introduced 100% compostable – plastic free mailers that all of our online orders will ship in from incredible Melbourne based company, Noissue. We also look forward to sharing the process of design to manufacturing through our blog.’
