Something Sweet for Sophia

When you have an appetite for dessert, the aesthetic has to match, something Melbourne decorator, Nicole Rosenberg understands berry well! Feeding into young Sophia’s taste for all things pink, fluffy and dessert-centric, Nicole was careful to cater to these requirements while also being careful about the tones of pink she chose for the room.

“We wanted to do a pink room but we didn’t want it to be too bright,” she said. So, to diversify the colour palette Nicole sought inspiration from the Adairs ‘Daisy’ range, mixing in the same orange and white hues as on Sophia’s bedspread, as well as sage green courtesy of the custom-made bed and Norsu desk lamp “to give the space an extra pop of colour!”

Founder of Liberty InteriorsV and Mum to three, Nicole is well-versed in constructing spaces that not only look beautiful but convey the occupant’s personality and interests. Cue a delicious, fun and quirky pair of Cupcake prints from Not Another Nursery, a pink and gold Mushkane rug for ultimate fluff-factor, and the IKEA Micke desk and chair to facilitate Sophia’s creative side.

The Al and Em pinboard is the ideal accompaniment to this studious space, perfect for hanging all Sophia’s drawings and inspiration.

The room is a wonderful little sanctum where Sophia can curl up on her bed, Nintendo Switch in hand for a session of Animal Crossing, or spend time playing or reading with her little brother, Oscar.

Working within a relatively intimate space, Nicole opted for a warm pink Dulux shade by the name of Blossom Time, calling to mind spring blooms at sunset thanks to the complementary oranges and sage green. “We wanted to envelope the room in something warm and calming,” she said, “injecting the other colours into the space to give it some personality and depth.”

“I think when you imbue a room with one particular colour, it creates a sense of calm and space. If you isolate it to a feature wall, I think it cuts off the space and makes it look too busy, and can have the effect of making the room feel smaller than it is.” The space may be small but it is full of life thanks to a beautiful hanging plant and the natural light flooding in through the bedside window. Everything has its place and the soft pink interior ties it all together in a subtle and pretty way.

Charged with the creative freedom to imagine the space as she saw fit, Nicole knew the room should reflect Sophia’s confidence, independence and sense of humour… and of course, her love of cake!
