REAL ROOM TOUR: Pretty in Pink – Minnie’s Toddler Room

We were lucky enough to come by Kristy Young of Minnie and Me Interiors last year when we first published Minnie’s Nursery in Minty Magazine Spring Edition. A stunning, not surprisingly, pink nursery to welcome Minnie in to the world. Nothing makes me happier than seeing how the hard work invested in designing and creating a nursery can stand the test of time. A few tweaks and the whole room feels fresh and ready for toddler action.

We caught up with Kristy to get the low down on Minnie’s new room, and how she created this stunning space with minimal expense.

TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM:

‘Minnie has just turned 2.  She loves picking flowers, playing at the park and watching bananas in pyjamas.’

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS:

‘Hi there, I’m Kristy… I started designing kids room when I was pregnant with our gorgeous Minnie, who is absolutely my muse. I designed a gorgeous girls nursery back in May 2017, which lead to an expansion of my business (Abigail’s nursery which was featured in Minty Magazine Summer 2017).  Abby’s nursery featured a custom floral wallpaper (our peony garden white); which proved extremely popular with our followers on social media. My brother encouraged me to extend my business to also producing removable wallpapers and we haven’t looked back!! We now create full sized wallpapers as well as smaller wallpapers for dollhouses, play kitchens and more.

As well as designing kids rooms, my job includes sourcing our beautiful wallpaper designs. I spend hours finding the right artwork to turn into jaw dropping wallpapers for our customers. I LOVE big florals, but we’ve recently released our most exciting a range… The Secret Garden Collection by Bek Halliday.  My talented and perfectionistic Dad, Dean with the help of my brother, Jon are sign writers by trade and are the amazing Minnie and Me production team. Our customers always comment on the outstanding quality of the product they receive and that’s thanks to these two.  We are loving our little family business.’

WHAT WAS THE BRIEF FOR THIS ROOM?

‘As Minnie turned two, it was time to create a big girl toddler room.  To avoid huge expense, I wanted to keep the furniture, the wallpaper (which she loves and proudly says her Papa made it for her) and to utilise some of the existing décor for a different purpose.  We wanted a gorgeous new bed and linen and a few new décor items to give the room a fresh/ new look.’

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

‘I knew it would be really hard to ever create a room that even came close to her amazing nursery, so I needed a statement bed to give the room a new look.  Both Petite Interior Co. and Little Liberty Rooms have great inspiration when it comes to styling the Peoni bed I chose.’

HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE?

‘Minnie’s nursery was all about pink so I stuck with this palette for her big girl toddler room.  I added a splash of pale blue and mauve to break up all the pink.’

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE IN THE ROOM AND WHY?

‘I love her new bed… the crescent upholstered king sized single bed in pink by Petite Interior Co and Peoni. The best part is, that Peoni’s beds are made to order and manufactured by a lovely family in Victoria.  It’s great to support small and Australian businesses.’

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

‘Configuring the room.  The cot was easy to make work in this space.  Minnie’s room is tiny so finding the right place for the bed proved a challenge.  I initially placed the bed running along the feature wall where the wardrobe currently is, leaving the bed head on the white painted wall, but something didn’t feel quite right, maybe it felt a little cluttered.  I adore the wallpaper and so placing the bedhead against it solved the issue and instantly made a feature of my two favourite things… the bed and the wallpaper, it also gave a larger area for Minnie to play on her comfy rug by Armadillo and Co.’

WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS SPACE?

‘It’s every pink lover’s dream, all the different pinks just tie together beautifully. I still adore the wallpaper as well as the wardrobe that we purchased off gumtree which we gave new life to with a lick of paint and new handles.

Whilst not everyone’s cup of tea, I love all of Minnie’s artwork, that was gifted to her by special people and on special occasions so opposite her bed, I made a feature of it all by creating her very own art gallery.  Also on that wall, is her dresser, not pictured and shelves which house all of her precious keep sakes. Such a nice view to have from your bed.’
