A playful space, designed to transition a little boy from a nursery to a big room whilst reflecting his bubbly personality. Mum of 4, Ashlee Jay has included custom-designed pieces, such as the wall shelves she designed and had made by her father-in-law, a bed by Melb Design Co and wall decals by Blond Noir. Tell us about Sonny, the owner of this room
“This room was the transition from a nursery to a big boy room. Sonny is a very talkative and bubbly boy, I asked him what colours he wanted for his new room and he said ‘nothing scary’ (he had a black tree decal in his nursery and called it the scary Christmas tree!) So we went with pastel blue and green, then he picked out the sloth print and the dinosaur art works. I opted for soft pastel colours and the decal of the sun, as it was so fitting given his name and personality.”
What was your inspiration?
“Following Sonny’s brief for ‘nothing scary’, I went with blue and green pastel tones and he chose art that reflects his love of animals. The Uber Circles wall decals from Blond Noir were a firm favourite after seeing them on Instagram, so the direction came together naturally from there. The walls are painted in Haymes Greyology 2. The colour palette is so calming and ties in so perfectly. Every time I go into his room, it makes me smile.”
What is your favourite feature in the room?
“I love the arch wall decal behind the bed and the sun. We always get a lot of comments on the custom bookshelves on the wall, which I designed and my father-in-law made. They both are such a focal point and hard to say which is my favourite!”
What was the biggest challenge?
“Working out the layout for the furniture was tricky because it’s a smallish space, but it has turned out perfectly.”
