Growing up I was so lucky. My mum loved decorating and would often re-do our bedrooms as a special treat or surprise. I think it’s why now, I so strongly believe that creating beautiful spaces for our children is so much more than just decorating. It comes from a place of love. To create security and comfort. And to bond with our children.
I love this room for this very reason. A gift from mother to daughter. Tahli’s mum, Tanya, engaged Kelly Donougher of 13 Interiors to create the perfect tween room for Tahli’s birthday. Inspired by Tahli’s love for the beach, the ocean blues and Scandi style create a cool and calm retreat that will last the teenage years.
TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM:
‘Tahli Struthers is the gorgeous owner of this room. She is a beautiful beach loving girl with a passion for blue and scandi vibes. She wanted her room transformed from a “ little girls” room to a teenage retreat to move into her high school years and be a fun place to hang out with her friends.’
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS:
‘My name is Kelly Donougher and I am the Creator and Director of 13 Interiors, “The 12 elements of design with you in mind” a Perth based Interior Design studio. I’ve been involved in a large variety of projects, commercial and residential and I have a particular interest in creating beautiful spaces that incorporate key elements of design whilst understanding individual requirements, budget, personality and style.’
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF FOR THIS ROOM?
‘Tahli is a young girl about to embark on her high school years. With her birthday being in January, Mum, Tanya, wanted to give her a beautiful gift of making over her room to reflect her style as a young teenager and create a look that is all about her at this age. Tahli first and for most wanted the colour blue to be incorporated. A bigger bed and somewhere to put all of her sentimental pieces and a place for her friends to ‘hang out’.’
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?
‘The inspiration came from meeting this gorgeous girl and seeing her long blonde hair, and hearing about her sporty lifestyle and love for the beach. I then chose the two prints ‘Salty Hair and Ocean Air’ which described her to a T. The tween room palette was then drawn from her love of blue and scandi vibes.’
HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE?
‘This was the easiest part! Tahli loves Blue, and the light oak furniture look. It was then simple to add the grey features in with the carpet being grey already and cool white walls.’
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE IN THE ROOM AND WHY?
‘I absolutely love the bed with the 2 prints above it. Everything about it is Tahli, the prints describe her, the bed was the queen bed she always wanted and the quilt has a beautiful embellishment that has a dreamcatcher like pattern to reflect the dream catchers in the room that she sleeps with every night.’
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
‘Logistics, I live in Perth and Tahli lives in Sydney. So it was really important to capture the brief and room requirements correctly before coming over to install and style. We facetimed a lot ! ha ha’
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS SPACE?
‘The feeling that you get when you walk into the room, warmth and harmony. This room is about Tahli and all of her loves in one space that’s hers for years to come.’
