BEHIND THE BRAND: PIPER & ME

Mother and daughter dream team Julia and Sarah chat to Minty about all things business, design and style

Piper & Me provide stunning high-quality clothing, accessories and footwear for both mums and bubs. If you love matchy matchy with your kids then trust me, you will fall in love with their ‘mummy & me’ section!

We love that Piper and Me is a mother-daughter duo team! How did the business idea come about?

Sarah: ‘I worked in retail (children’s fashion) for most of my adult life & when I had my daughter Piper, I discovered the world of Instagram (and developed a serious shopping addiction) Mum & I would melt over the gorgeous things I had bought for her.

I wasn’t keen to head back to my previous job & had always wanted to be able to do something from home so I can be home with my babies (Thomas, 5 & Piper, 2)

Mum suggested we channel our knowledge & passion for gorgeous, practical fashion & start a children’s boutique!

Fast forward two years & we have come a long way from our first release. Julia was since made redundant from her job of 15 years so we now work full time together!’

We know high-quality and practical design is a core value of Piper and Me. Can you tell us a little bit more about your business philosophies?

It has always been important for us to provide practical, high-quality pieces that have been made in an ethical environment. We strive to design timeless pieces that will never age & have them made to a standard that they will withstand the everyday play and rough & tumble of children.

Creating & maintaining relationships with our customers & manufacturer is one of our top priority.’

Your visual style and insta feed are seriously #goals! How do you create such beautiful content?

Firstly, thank you!! This is something we work super hard on! We are very lucky to work with some amazing accounts & have a wonderful team of brand reps who take the most incredible photos of their children in our pieces.

A special mention must go to our resident product stylist & photographer, Sam from @my3ratbagz3164.’

What’s next for Piper and Me?

We are working to build up our mama range to become more of a one stop shop where you can shop for yourself & your little love. It makes us feel warm & fuzzy when we see a customer purchase something for themselves and their little one because we know as a mum we often treat our kids before ourselves!’

Who are your go-to style guru instagram accounts?

Sam from @my3ratbagz3614

Kyree from @misskyreeloves

Eleesha from @the.quinn.girls

What do you find are the challenges of owning an online business?

Balance. The juggle of business/mum/partner/house can be tough!
We also find some difficulty in not having our product in front of customers where they can see/feel the items for themselves. This is why we always have our items photographed in numerous different ways, on different aged children & different settings to show them off.’

3 key words that describe your style?

  1. Practical
  2. Timeless
  3. A touch of vintage

What is the best thing about working with your mum/daughter?

Julia:  ‘I love that we are always on the same page we often say exactly the same thing at the same time. It’s a joy to work with Sarah we love our business meetings where there is coffee and muffins consumed, never feels like a chore.’

Sarah: ‘How close we’ve become throughout this time & how much fun we have! We love what we do, and we love doing it together which means it never feels like “work”

We are always on the same page and find ourselves texting each other the exact same thing.’

We love that you have collaborated with an Australian artist to create your unique printed fabric designs. How did this collaboration come about?

We always wanted to have a point of difference from what else was on the market & didn’t want to be limited by the prints that were readily available.

We love that by bringing these prints to life, we are not only giving our customers a unique design they won’t find elsewhere, but we are also helping to support another mum & her family.

Our prints are all screen printed (by hand, one colour at a time!) onto the fabric & turned into the pieces you see in our store. We think that’s pretty special!’
