Behind The Brand: Juno + Ace

JUNO + ACE

Juno + Ace is a Sydney based homewares and jewellery brand that makes handmade kinetic mobiles, brass wall hangings and delicate jewellery. The uber-talented Sacha Jacobsen created Juno + Ace in 2017, not long after her third baby was born. What started as a jewellery brand has evolved into a range of stylish brass homewares pieces, including stunning mobiles for children’s bedrooms.

Sacha’s creative journey has been peppered with a variety of jobs that she explains, “never really felt right.” That was, until she discovered her talent for making things with metal. It brings me great joy to share this beautiful story with you. Don’t miss your chance to win a piece from the Juno + Ace range by heading over to our Instagram page @mintymagazine to enter!

FINDING THE BALANCE

Sacha enjoyed an idyllic childhood, raised in a small fishing village called St Ives in Cornwall, UK. Popular with many artists during the 1950s and 60s for the beautiful ‘Cornish light’, the town is filled with galleries and sculptures and even has it’s own Tate. Exposure to artists such as Anthony Frost and his father, Sir Terry Frost are a major inspiration to her style. “I worked in a restaurant on Porthminster beach filled with their artwork, both artists are known for their modern abstractions, and that is now ingrained in my style.”

Since moving to the northern beaches of Sydney, Sacha has taken part in numerous design markets. She admits that she quickly realised her jewellery really had to stand out in a crowd full of talented makers. “I needed to do something special to make my brand stand out and that’s when I started making larger pieces.”

When looking for decorative items to adorn her own child’s bedroom, she was unable to find the right piece, so decided to try her hand at creating something herself. “That’s when the idea of the brass mobiles came about, and how the brand evolved to include larger wall hangings as well.”

“What I love most about the mobiles is the fact they can grow with your child long after the initial baby phase and it can become a piece to feature in your living room or kitchen, not just in the nursery.”

Turning to creativity in the chaos

Creativity brings balance to this hard-working Mum, who experienced post-natal depression after the birth of her second child. “When I am balanced, I am a better Mum. I used to get really stressed when my workload was high and I had to juggle the business and look after my kids. I would not handle the pressure well at all, then I’d end up feeling like I was a bad Mother.”

A light-bulb moment occurred during a yoga class, “the teacher reminded me that in every event that had passed, everything had worked out fine. She said ‘Darling, you’ve got this’. It’s something I often tell myself in times of stress! I can totally manage the juggling act of having kids AND a creative business…I’ve been doing it for 8 years already!”

Juno + Ace proudly support the charity PANDA – Perinatal Anxiety & Depression Australia and $5 from every online sale goes to helping them. Sacha adds, “Being a Mum is so rewarding but it is also so hard. If I can help another Mum by doing what I love, then I am so happy to do so.”
