A Place for Calm

Oak and Orange is the story of two builders’ wives and best friends who design and build dream homes together. Together, Sarah Jobse & Heather Gampe take you behind the scenes of their own journey to inspire others to create homes that are both practical and beautiful – and of course, a dream to live in.

Tell us about the brief for this room:

‘The nursery brief was to create a calm, relaxing space using key items that could later function as beautiful stand-alone pieces within the home when the nursery was no longer needed.’

What was your inspiration?

‘In the past, we moved house so often that I never had the opportunity to create a picture-perfect nursery. In Dream Home #7, I jumped at the chance to design the nursery. In all honesty, my inspiration for this room came predominantly from the artworks we chose for this space. The artworks have beautiful soft muted pinks, golds and white. I paired these colours with neutrals and natural materials such as rattan and timber furniture.’

How did you select your colour palette?

‘I wanted the room to have a soft, feminine feel whilst also including a lot of gender-neutral tones (and items). To me, a nursery should be calming. My ultimate goal for this room was for it to be a relaxing and enjoyable space to be in. I think the colour palette and materials we selected achieved just that.’

On the walls:

‘Taubman‘s Crisp White’

What is your favourite feature in the room?

‘I can’t narrow it down to just one so here goes my two favourite items in the nursery! The first is the stunning loft chair from The Cullin DesignThere’s something special and soothing about a generous cosy nursing chair for mum and bub to snuggle in and enjoy together. And the second, the dreamy cot from Poppy’s Little Treasures.’

What was the biggest challenge?

‘My biggest challenge when it came to designing this space was definitely the layout. Nurseries can be difficult to design as you have lots of small items to consider. Our top tip here is to include a floor rug, as it helps tie all the small furniture pieces and other items together and really grounds the room.’

Sarah’s Tradition

‘Christmas is always a week-long event for our family. It’s a wonderful time of year where we not only get to see our immediate family members but our extended family too. There’s always lots of swimming in the pool and BBQs. And we can’t forget the super early morning drive to Sydney Fish Market – we do it every year without fail!’
