So many times, I come across amazing little businesses whose journeys have started just as mine has. I love that in launching Romper Stomper kids, young mum Jessica Sette has made life for the rest of us that smidge easier. I also had trouble finding cool shoes in one place so to discover a one-stop-shop of sorts, was a big win for me!
Its Jessica’s keen eye for quality and design which really sets this boutique apart, and I was fortunate to chat with her this week about how the whole concept evolved over a mere matter of months.
How did Romper Stomper Kids come to fruition?
The concept came to me when I was heavily pregnant. I was like a mad woman driving around to baby clothing boutiques around Melbourne and googling through 6 pages of baby shoe brands looking for soft leather baby booties! I thought there must be an easier way to find a good selection of good quality baby shoes in the one spot, so I came up with the idea to set up an online destination for a wide range of great shoes for little feet. We did quite a bit of research to find high calibre brands of kids shoes from around the globe that would fit our Romper Stomper quality benchmark and it turned out that they were really happy to jump on board with us as an Australian retailer.
We want to give our customers that boutique experience with hard to find designs, zoomed in shots of every shoe along with lots of info, free shipping & returns – all from the comfort of their home.
How would you describe the range/brands you have?
Our brands are not only stylish and on trend, they have been sourced very carefully and selected based on a number of criteria. Our entire range features breathable, genuine leather materials with important features such as appropriate soles for different stages of development, durable construction and good zips/closures that all promote healthy foot development. Whether they are a well known brand such as Ralph Lauren & Vans or lesser known such as Donsje, they are selected based on their quality. Customers are really enjoying discovering these cool and different brands they knew nothing about and appreciate the educational aspect of our product pages showing the features of every shoe.
You have a beautiful 10 month old baby boy, how are you finding managing the new business with being a mum?
It’s chaotic, challenging and constantly demands my full mind power, but it’s so rewarding and I love it! I also like that it gives me work-life balance and the time to devote to my little man. Let’s just say, there are quite a few shoe designers out there that have met him! He is a regular in my meetings, which comes in handy particularly to determine first hand whether to stock a shoe.
I am so lucky to receive a lot of help from my supportive network of friends, family and business partners. It’s not easy running a business and look after a growing baby, but it keeps my mind active and happy, also providing me with amazing life lessons. I think it’s so important that mums take the time to do something for themselves, follow their passion and do what makes them happy. If we are happy in ourselves, then that energetic spirit rubs off onto our children. If you’re thinking of starting your own business, I say give it a go! You can never regret learning and taking the journey.
What trends do you think we will be seeing in kids fashion in future?
I think more and more we are seeing kids fashion following adult fashion trends. We really do love dressing our kids now essentially like us, as mini adults! In shoe trends, we are going to see next Winter the continuation of the metallics, gentle florals for girls, hues of blue and green and of course the popular strong monochrome influence with blacks, greys and charcoals. High tops and sneakers still dominate major kids shoe trends and kids shoes in general are becoming very gender neutral. I especially love seeing little girls rocking it in strong colours and designs. Girl power! We don’t have a gender selection on our website as we really feel that most shoes shouldn’t be stuffed into a girl/boy category.
Morning: Going for brekkie at my local, then having time to clean my house while bub sleeps! Arvo: Feeling nice and fresh to tackle the day, going out & taking some snaps and enjoying the sunshine with the family. Night: We wind down by 8pm and I enjoy a glass of red! A perfect day involves my husband, so those days normally occur on weekends! It may seem boring but to have hubby & bub with me is my kind of perfect.
What are your favourite staple clothing pieces?
Black denim jeans, a white tee and a pastel structured jacket. It can be taken from day to night. In terms of shoes, a pair of metallic sandals are comfortable for my work day and a good pair of black pointy pumps will dress up the look at night.
My little man’s staple pieces are a loose cotton grey marle tee, patterned bright shorts and his Tip Toey Joey Laguna Suede or Ralph Lauren Navy pull on sneakers. We always pack another 3 sets wherever we go just in case…;)
We are working on a cool educational blog to answer all of the common questions parents ask about the fit of kids shoes, we are expanding our range to 20 brands by early next year and we hope to move up to bigger sizes past 5yrs of age. Beyond that, we’ll just have to see where it takes us…but it sure has been a fun journey so far!
