We are always on the hunt for rooms the break the mould, yet still keep a clean and modern aesthetic. Eli’s nursery does just that. Created by his mum Jess Douglas-Monks of Luna and Wolfe, it is so jam packed full of character we don’t even know where to look! The use of colour brings contemporary flair, set off perfectly the by monochrome accessories.
Jess has incorporated her and her husband’s own passions and interests to create warmth and personality in the room until Eli’s own interests take centre stage.
It’s a beautifully modern nursery that we are so happy to share with you!
TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM:
‘Eli is a beautiful, bubbly little 9 month old.
At the moment his favourite things are drawstrings, our Staffy Samson, Rock a Bye a Bear and his sisters, Evie and Arya’
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS:
‘I started Luna & Wolfe last year while I was pregnant with Eli so it’s still really in its early stages at the moment, having had to take a lot of time off once he was born. Eli’s room Is the first full room I’ve designed and installed since I started the business and although it isn’t perfect, I’m very proud of it because I managed to design and put it all in (with a lot of help of my husband) whilst heavily pregnant and still working full time as well as being mum to my daughters!’
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF FOR THIS ROOM?
‘The interesting thing about the brief for Eli’s nursery is that the entire design revolved around not giving away his sex. My husband decided very early on that he didn’t want to know whether we were having a girl or a boy, and while I would like to think I would have designed something fairly neutral anyway, this proved to be quite a challenge throughout the process.
I also decided to give this room a bit of a musical theme, including prints of John Lennon and The Beatles who are major influences on us as well as my husband’s own banjo.
A reading corner was a must, as was a Harry Potter reference!’
HOW DID YOU SELECT YOU COLOUR PALETTE?
‘I always knew I wanted it to be fairly monochromatic with some scandi touches but once I knew I was having a boy, it remained almost completely monochrome, except for the gold really.
Since his birth, touches of green have crept in, and I imagine that as his personality develops, others colours may as well.’
‘The wall decals are the ‘Irregular Dot’ decals from Urban Walls and the gold triangle is Metro Mars from the Dulux Metallic range.’
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE IN THE NURSERY AND WHY?
‘I can’t choose between the gallery wall and the gold triangle with the John Lennon print.
All of the pictures in the gallery wall were either custom made or very carefully hand picked for personal reasons. The John Lennon print was a custom job gifted to me by Kate at Studio Cockatoo for me and I love it so much. When Eli was really tiny he cried all the time, and whenever he was on the change table, I would tell him to talk to John and tell him what was wrong. I also love the gold triangle, which was my husband’s idea.’
‘Getting it to look the way I wanted in that particular room, which doesn’t make interior design easy. Also, doing it all on a very tight budget (<$2k including all furniture).’
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS NURSERY?
‘I love that it reflects my style and the things we are passionate about like music, and Harry Potter!
I really love the personal touches, that no one else will have because they are custom made, such as the Beautiful Boy print by Black & Type, the John Lennon print by Studio Cockatoo and I love the banjo on the wall, which is my husband’s, another of his styling ideas!’
