REAL ROOM TOUR: A colourful adventure nursery

There are so many things to love about this nursery created by Tennille Burnuup of Tennille Joy Interiors. The sense of space and colour popping from the muted backdrop instantly stand out. It feels fun and adventurous, exactly as planned.

This nursery, however,  is so much more than meets the eye. With a place for a weary mumma to rest and a desk for dad to work from, this room is a beautiful example of a new baby being the absolute centre her parents world.

Tennille was happy to share with us just how she created this wonderfully balanced, and practical space.

TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM:

‘Tennille Joy Interiors was engaged by their clients to present a fun nursery for their baby girl. High on the wish list was a chair that turns into a bed and a mini desk area. The rest of the brief was free for us to run away with the design.’

TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS:

‘From establishing a design direction to carrying a project through to its completion, I ensure every step of the process will be a resounding success.’

Ultimately, my joy is that feeling when a client walks through the door of their completed space and they feel a sense, a feeling which may not be describable, but they feel at one and happy.

WHAT WAS THE BRIEF FOR THIS ROOM?

‘The clients live in a renovated Californian Bungalow with the parents’ room at the end of the house. The mother requested to have a bed in the nursery, so that she can rest while the baby sleeps. The father works from home one day a week. He likes the idea of bringing his laptop in the baby’s room while the baby is sleeping. When the baby grows up, she can use the desk herself.’

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?

‘Our inspiration evolved around fun and adventure. As the house is light, full of colour, warm and inviting, we aimed to project this style into Georgia’s room too.’

HOW DID YOU SELECT YOUR COLOUR PALETTE?

‘I assessed the existing palette of the home and selected a warm grey and inky navy as a neutral base for the nursery.

We started with a base colour of inky navy for the custom made chair. From there, I selected some artwork to fit in with a fun, adventurous style room. Co-incidentally, both the client and I fell in love with a beautiful textured pink fabric that we had custom made in to an oversized cushion. With white and light oak furniture as a backdrop, the colours and furnishings fell into place.’

ON THE WALLS:

‘Dulux Silkwort in a Low Sheen Finish has been painted to dado rail height with Dulux Lexicon Quarter in Low Sheen Finish on the skirting boards and remaining walls.’

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE IN THE NURSERY AND WHY?

‘For a unique look to the chest of drawers / change table, we altered the look by changing the knobs to multi-colours. The colours compliment the Indian Head Dress and Dream Catcher artwork.

The award winning Prostoria Uplift chair was selected for comfort and functionality. This chair transforms into the most comfortable bed, perfect for mum to nap on.’

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?

‘The biggest challenge was to introduce the right desk into the room without making it look too much like an office. With floating shelving and wall decals, we softened the corner to create more of a sense of fun.’

WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS NURSERY?

‘With the generous proportions of the room, we were able to play around with the spatial planning. We love the idea of anchoring the rug, cot and pendant light in the centre of the nursery.’
