When Kathryn Hawkes, founder of House of Hawkes, shared this stunning nursery with me I knew I couldn’t keep it to myself – it needs to be admired by the people!
House of Hawkes is a small interior design agency based in Dubai. It offers a range of services from photography styling to e-designs, home consultations and full interior installations for both commercial and residential spaces. This Safari Circus themed nursery speaks volumes for the beautiful aesthetic Kathryn achieves in all of her work. It is such a calming, peaceful space with a perfect amount of interest and quirk to draw you in. I absolutely adore it.
I am delighted to share Kathryn’s inspiration and secrets of this incredible creation with you all here.
TELL US ABOUT THE OWNER OF THIS ROOM:
“Zahirah Marty is a fellow South African expat living in Dubai. With a background in TV and media, she established a boutique PR agency with an impressive client list, including renowned fashion illustrator and artist, Megan Hess. Zahirah has recently launched her new mummy blog, Meet Mrs Marty.
A few weeks ago, Zahirah contacted me to discuss a special project that she needed help with – creating a nursery for her baby boy. I hadn’t designed a nursery in a while and was really excited to take this on.”
WHAT WAS THE BRIEF FOR THIS ROOM?
“Zahirah and her hubby, Andrew, didn’t have any preconceived ideas in mind so I was afforded free reign with the design pitch. I lucked out with one of those projects that has a magical sense of chemistry from the very start. After a few small tweaks, I got the green light on the first concept I delivered. I immediately got going with planning this adorable Safari Circus nursery.”
WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION?
“Zahirah and her hubby are both animal lovers (he’s a vet) so there was a natural inclination to incorporate animals, but I really wanted to find something quite unique for them. When I spotted the adorable animals in hats on Etsy (FarmHouseOutlet), I was sold, and the rest of the ideas sort of grew from there.
Since the mum-to-be and I are fellow South Africans, we made great effort where possible to support businesses and brands from the ‘homeland’, but as the daddy-to-be is from Australia, we made to sure to include a bit of his heritage too.”
YOUR FAVOURITE FEATURE?
“My favourite feature would probably be the reading nook because we installed a really cute DIY bowler hat lamp. I’m also a big fan of the string lights that we draped over a wall hook alongside the cot.”
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
“The nursery is a large room with one small window, so making the space feel light and airy was a bit of a challenge – the pastel colour palette played a big part in achieving this.”
WHAT IS YOUR OVERALL FAVOURITE THING ABOUT THIS SPACE?
“The wallpaper, animal pints and the rustic little wardrobe that we sourced from a furniture warehouse and painted in a grey-ish green (MINTY BREEZE by Jotun Paints).”
