It’s a Monday morning and I’ve just finished the school drop off before returning home for a much needed coffee. Before the caffeine gets time to work its magic I am dialing in for a phone date with Natalie Bassingthwaite to discuss her new kids clothing label, Chi Khi. I can already tell it’s going to be a great week.
Chatting to Nat is like catching up with an old girlfriend and within seconds we are comparing notes on the joys of motherhood while I rock baby Max off to sleep with my left foot. The life of a working mother is at times a challenging one, and right now Nat is splitting her time between Melbourne and New Zealand where she is filming the new season of X-Factor.
With a thriving career, it’s little wonder the launch of Nat’s latest venture has been such a huge success. In just over two years, she and a dedicated team have worked to produce the first range of Chi Khi clothing and accessories for children aged 0-4. Nat says the idea was born from the need to find stylish and hard-wearing children’s clothes which were also soft on sensitive skin.
“The result is a monochromatic palette created from bamboo and cotton, which means it feels beautiful to wear,” she says.
“I love things to be well made, comfortable and to last, so every Chi Khi Mini piece has taken that into consideration.”
After Max arrived I was lucky to receive a beautiful gift pack from the Chi Khi team. I must say, I have a real thing for packaging and these guys didn’t disappoint. The embossed box and delicious cotton drawstring carry bag are pure magic and definitely able to be re-purposed.
It’s these finite details which Chi Khi have become famous for and I ask Nat what children Harper and Hendrix think about all the fuss.
“They are the best form of grounding…no matter what you do, children always find their parents work fascinating,” she says.
“Life is so busy that when we have family time, it’s really just our time…we love the simple things like a walk to the bay or lunch in the park.”
“We have so much in the pipeline,” says Nat.
“We are developing a couple of beautiful skin products including a soothing nappy balm for dry sensitive skin as well as a new Lounge range later in the year.”
I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait! To view the current collection which is sold exclusively through chikhi.co click here.
