Interior Stylist Julia Green of Greenhouse Interiors has partnered with Dulux to provide a step-by-step guide on how to tackle this teen bedroom makeover.
Designing a teenager’s bedroom is no easy feat! By this age, their bedroom becomes a multipurpose zone for entertaining friends, studying and sleeping! Working with their own sense of style is an important part of the process to ensure a result everyone loves.
To help make every parent’s job easier, Julia shows us how easy it can be to create a retreat that any teen would die for!
JUST ADD COLOUR
Julia has worked with the Dulux Identity palette as it works in perfect harmony with this playful, modern artwork by Rachel Castle. Julia says “Colour is the first step. It is the quickest and easiest way to breathe life into a room and will give you the foundation for a space your teen will love.” By taking inspiration from the artwork, Julia has created a cohesive look punctuated by pops of colour. The dramatic patterned rug anchors the look and adds a softness under foot.
FUN-FACTOR
“The original room was functional but uninspiring” Julia adds, “so I wanted to ramp up the fun-factor with some surprise colour hits and introduce texture and softness for a cosy, welcoming feel.” Julia selected a soft shade for the feature wall Dulux Wash&Wear in Apricot Fool – and kept the adjoining walls and trims in a Dulux Wash&Wear Lexicon Quarter for contrast. For a tonal effect, Julia suggests using the main wall colour in a darker or lighter strength on shelving, a desk or side table.
REFRESH AND UPCYCLE
An easy and inexpensive way to transform the look is to add a coat of paint to existing furniture pieces. Perhaps you could even get your teenager on the tools to help out with a DIY project?! Julia explains “Here, I’ve painted the top of a plain timber desk with Dulux Aquanamel in Italian Clay and the drawer in Red Clown. The bedside table is painted with Dulux Aquanamel in Mondrian Blue.”
CREATE A CENTREPIECE
The bedding creates a welcoming yet playful combination of funky retro-patterns against a denim bedhead which is, without a doubt, the centrepiece of the room. “Mismatched bedding is all the rage right now, and it works brilliantly with this playful look! So I laid the bed with sheets in contrasting colours and piled it high with cushions in different colours, shapes and textures.” This undone look can be achieved by layering a duvet, sheets and pillow slips from different sets and finishing with colourful and textured cushions.

FROM DRAB TO FAB!
This teen bedroom makeover is vibrant and filled with energy and personality. The clever use of bold, saturated brights and clashing patterns delivers a teenager’s retreat that is playful and fun. Julia adds “When starting a project like this, my top tip is to get your teen involved from the start. Be prepared to try something new – it’s the perfect chance to be a little adventurous with colour.”
