Dong-Maria Le, owner of Baby Donkie and mother of four shares with us how she turned her passion for shopping into a successful online business supported by a huge social media following.

TELL US ABOUT BABY DONKIE – WHAT YOU DO, WHAT YOU SPECIALISE IN AND YOUR BUSINESS ETHOS?

At Baby Donkie, you will find a gorgeous collection of children’s clothing, accessories, decor and toys carefully curated for the style-conscious shopper. Located in Sydney, we source our range both globally and in our own backyard. I focus on designers and brands that fit in with our style. We love pops of colour, playful prints, original design, timeless interiors, minimalist style and beautiful yet functional toys.”

HOW DID BABY DONKIE COME TO BE?

“I love shopping, looking for new labels (especially design-led pieces) while hunting down a good bargain. When I had my two boys, I found myself buying quite a bit online, both in Australia and overseas. I started selling a few things on eBay to see if others liked what I liked – and they did! My intention was to start a business that would eventually allow me to spend more time at home with my kids.”Baby Donkie shares her story and top tips to creating a successful business and ruling social mediaWHERE DID YOUR PASSION FOR BABY DONKIE COME FROM?

“Given my career background, Baby Donkie has been my creative outlet. From the start I have been involved in every aspect of the business.  From concept design for the brand and website, to sourcing products, packing orders and establishing a social media presence. I love every part of it and still get a thrill each time an order is made. I love interacting with my customers to see how they have styled a room or how their child wore an outfit on a special day.”

HOW DO YOU CREATE THE IMAGERY WE SEE FEATURED?

“It is important to know what defines your own style. It will determine the products you will be drawn to, and the imagery flows from there. If you do not have a physical store, the images you create become one of your most powerful selling tools. They enable the customer to see how your products can be styled. Many of the brands I stock create beautiful lifestyle images which are easy to share with my existing and potential customers. However, I also feel engaging a photographer/stylist to create images unique to your store is a non-negotiable cost. I use Concrete and Honey and the images speak for themselves.”

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR BABY DONKIE?

“I would love Baby Donkie to be the top-of-mind online destination for shoppers looking for beautiful kids’ fashion, décor and toys. I’d also like to develop a physical retail offer. Either through pop-up stores or perhaps a bricks and mortar store down the track sometime.”
